Assignment #2-Personality and Obesity

We discussed in class how Sheldon's Body Type Paradigm had been used to predict personality (even to the extent of "profiling" for law enforcement). It appears, though, that certain personality traits are more common in persons who are obese. Read the following study summary by the American Psychological Association (APA)relating to the two traits (neuroticism and impulsivity).

This Fruit Salad is Fantastic!

Food is a big deal in most peoples' lives. Describe in as much detail as you care to share about your personal, emotional relationship with food of all kinds. Examples: Do you think about food? Or, is it no big deal...just something you have to do? Do you like to see others enjoy their food? Did your family always eat meals together or did everyone do their own thing? Do you prefer to eat in public or privately? Have your food preferences changed? Do you eat more when happy or sad, or bored? Do you precisely  measure your food intake? Would you fast for two days? Are you a vegetarian? A vegan? Has something you ate tasted so good that you cried? Or wrote a song about it? Use your imagination.........135 words or less. Post here by next Tuesday!

  1. I view food as a physical need, but I definitely believe that it can be used to bond people. I think that some of the times when I feel closest to someone is when I'm eating a large meal with them; it's a mutual feeling of satisfaction when you share good food with someone else.

  2. Food is obviously a physical need because we need it to survive. I do admit that I think about it sometimes because I like to plan out what I'm having for dinner that morning or the day before. I tend to eat more when I'm happy or bored and not when I'm sad. Personally, I do not think that I could ever be a vegetarian just because there are so many things that you need in your daily diet from animals. I understand that there can be substitutes for these products but meat is such a good source of protein.

  3. Personally I love food. I often find myself remaking songs when Im alone and thinking about food. Food is a major part of peoples everyday lives. I find myself snacking a lot through the day, and even though I love eating food often, I tend to be a very picky eater.

    (song about food)

Pull to the crib to get my grub on
Open up the fridge but the food gone
I want a salad, got lettuce no crutons
    bread gone, ham gone
No EBT card and I'm home alone!

  4. I love good and healthy food that taste great .In the last couple of years I have had to change the way I eat ,first of all I went on the weight watcher diet and lost about 35 pounds. So now I don't eat fried foods and a lot of snacks and junk foods and now because of recent health reasons I eat lots of salads and raw vegetables and baked or boiled meats and I only drink diet soda and lots of water which is very good for you. But I still enjoyed tasty food whether at home prepared or at a restaurant with my family

  5. I think cooking is something sacred. Everyone is not blessed with the gift of being a good cook. And when I say cooking I do not mean reading a recipe book or measuring out ingredients perfectly. Its about feeling, flavor, and harmony. Making a dish is like writing a symphony it HAS to harmonize. You have all these crazy ingredients and you bring all of it together to make something amazing. Food is like one of the most important things in life. You need it to live and grow. Food promotes healthy skin, helps your hair grown, eye sight, and hearing. Food can make you feel good. When your sad it can make you happy. You have a freedom of creativity with food.

  6. Cooking in my family has always been something to bring the family together. Whether it was the process of passing down the recipe or the meal itself. I am not sure to what extent I enjoy food. I eat out of necessity. I find that I get more out of cooking for others than eating the food myself. I rarely get a chance to get fulfillment from a meal and find it more and more seldom that I like the meal itself. I never have been one to use food to satisfy an emotion nor to solve a problem. -Nick Lucas

  7. In many ways food makes people who they are. If they eat healthy most likely they are more worried about how the look or how healthy their body is. If they eat horrible then they obviously feel no need to worry about what they eat. Dillon Matthews

  8. In so many ways food does make people come together think about it if somebody invites you to dinner your going to want to go and of course if it has your favorite food too. I love food food makes me happy it helps my day go by faster.People in the world i think use food for the same thing. I also believe that everybody should eat health food not fast food even if it does make you feel happy to eat it because theres a bad side of it . Besim canolli

  9. I personally have a very definitive love hate relationship with food. I have definitely struggled with weight and the types of food I eat. The article has merit and I can see what it is trying to say and I agree. Finding the right balance between eating what you want to enjoy it and eating what you should is very hard thing to accomplish. I went vegetarian for about 4-5 months and lost about 45 lbs. This is simply due to the fact that eating fast food constantly just doesn’t work anymore! I have since gone back to eating meat and am keeping the types I eat under control. Being a vegetarian was fun in a way because you became part of the club. If you haven’t tried it before, better bring the tums! - Travis Nelson

  10. I love food but I try and watch what I eat and how I eat it. I would love to sit down and eat a huge burger everyday but I try and maintain a healthy body and as much junk that'd I would love to eat, I have to refrain myself. I think sitting around with a good group of friends or family is an awesome way to eat a meal because you're all enjoying food with a good conversation. I loved sitting with my family for dinner when I was younger. It was the best way to talk about our days and what we have going on that week. Personally, if I am upset I cannot eat a single bite of anything. I only tend to think about food when I am bored. I try and just drink lots of water so that I do not snack too much. Going 4 hours without food I start to get shaky so I cant imagine fasting and I think i could become a vegetarian but I would start to miss steak too much! --Emily Abosch

  11. Personally I've never been the type of person to eat exactly whats healthy for you and what's not. I usually just tend to eat whatever my appetite has a desire for. I think this benefits me because of my metabolism. I am very active and always doing exercising activities to help improve my health and overall well-being. But I do plan on making healthier food choices soon since I am starting to get a little older and it could affect my overall health.

  12. In some way or another I think food means something to everyone. Before this year I use to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I never gain weight so I never put much thought into what I was putting in to my body. Coming to college I became friends with people who watched what they ate. Not because of the calories but to keep their body healthy. I use to be VERY addicted to caffeine. I would get in bad moods and get very bad heahaches if i didnt drink pop. I do not drink pop at all anymore. maybe i will slip and buy a 20 oz once a month, but thats about it. since i have changed my diet and eat healthier I just all together feel better about myself. I am less tired and have alot more energy.

  13. I absolutely love food, I can't get enough of it. Unfortunately the more you eat the more weight you gain, and although this isn't always true for everyone, like those with a higher metabolism, but mine isn't the greatest. So, being in the military in this constant battle between loving food and having to maintain my weight and body type, I can only describe my relationship with food as a Love/Hate relationship. Even though it can be my best friend, it can be my worst enemy. But all body maintaining aside, I could win an eating competition or 2. :)

  14. When I tend to think of food. I get really happy my whole mood changes. I think food affect my daily activities. If i do not have food at least 4 times a day I tend to get angry and half of the time I cant function properly without food. When I eat I don't pay attention to how many calories. I just eat it. I think I can go a couple of days without eating food but no more than two weeks. To some everything up food makes me feel happy and helps me get my strength and takes me through the day. I than God everyday for food cause without food we would not be able to survive.

  15. When I think of food I think of a love, hate relationship. As much as I love and find comfort in it, I also hate that I have fought with weight issues a lot of my life. I'm sure it has something to due with my mom having weight issues, and my family didn't talk much and seemed to turn to food in some cases. Well I find myself doing that now, and sometimes I find it hard not too. One thing I have found to curve my thoughts on food is actually preparing it for others. I find more happiness in knowing people enjoy something I created and made for them. But then again nothing beats a good burger either.

  16. When I think about food I wonder what I am hungry for, or what sounds good. I might not even be hungry and I will eat just to eat because it tastes good. I would say that I eat pretty healthy, but there are times I eat not so healthy. Thankfully I have a pretty high metabolism; having that high metabolism results into me not really watching what I eat, and so I tend to eat everything.

  17. I can't really see any relations too food with me. I eat when i'm hungry and i eat until i am full or the food just taste really good. There are those foods that absolutely taste great but since i have a high metabolism i can really eat what ever and not think twice about it but i mean of course that doesn't mean i'm going to be at Mc D's all the time just means that if there's something i wanna eat or taste i can cause its really not a worry to me.

  18. I know that food is physical need and make our mental active. If i talk relation between food and my family, only my older brother and my mother loved any kinds of food. For my parents it should be vegetarian food and my siblings eat all kind of food. What is common between me and my family is we all loved seafood. I love seafood, I am good at cooking seafood, especially fry and roast. Beside seafood I can also cook other food, but everything will be fry and roast.

My relationship with food is interesting. Obviously it is a necessity to human life but over eating can be a problem. I just recently realized that is is important to choose what you eat and to healthier foods. This is why i have recently started subbing sides of fry's or something else fatty with salads and i can honestly say that i feel exceptionally better.

  21. Personally I love food! Sometimes i feel that food can be a good and bad thing. A couple of years ago i used food for a stress reliever which resulted in a bad thing. Now that i know better and feel better im trying to be cautious of what i eat and how much. I do feel that the way you look determines how you feel about yourself.

  22. I know this is really late, but I'm going to do it now in hopes that it'll still be accepted.
I just wanted to say that my relationship is complicated. I know I'm overweight and you would think that means that I love food, but honestly I'm just one of those people that eats when they're bored because they can. I'm not addicted or obsessed, just bored a lot. I could probably do without food is I found something to entertain me long enough.

  23. I think food & obesity possibly have to do with bordom. Thats when I often think of food. When meals are often served, I dont have the desire to it. seems like an impulse thing for me. Krystle Starner
